Some Random Thoughts on Hamilton....
I liked parts of Hamilton on D+, but not others ... some random thoughts ..

1) Lyrics. I thought SOME of the lyrics were pretty clever, but was very disappointed in the all the profanity, and the cheap thrills with "bad words". I am on that believes that generally profanity is the sign of a weak mind trying to express itself ... certainly not a genius trying to express himself "I can rhyme a word with Duck that will make everyone gasp" is 3rd grade playground stuff, not genius stuff. Many shows that really are genius have profanity, but they use the profanity to advance the story. Yeah, the Bartenders in Les Mis are really really crude ... but that is there is advance the story of the difference between reformed Jean Val-jean and those in the bar ... and the difference between the kid saved from that and the kid left in that. Hamilton's "ryhmnes with luck" isn't there to advance the story, it's just there to shock. Not Genius at alll, pathetic 3rd grade.

It's perhaps even more disappointing, since the lyrics in maybe half of the rest of the musical are really clever ... So I think he probably COULD have come up a genius way to get across the message with resorting to cheap 3rd grade playground shock value. "You'll be Back", "10 Duel Commandments", " Room where it happened" really are amazing. I think he COULD have better, but went for the shock jock rather than genius.

2) Music. I did enjoy have a different style of music, or several different styles of music. The soundtrack is fun, and my kids have been singing it around the house for a year at least. I think "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor DreamCoat" did a better job of bringing in LOTS of different styles of music into a musical, and showing that every kind of music can be used to tell a story. It's fun to hear a genre of music (rap) which focuses usually / mostly on the words and word games used in a musical type format. And the R&B and Jazz elements are fun as well.

3) A tiny bit of politics ... It's surprising and a bit disappointing that in a musical about the "downtrodden", that they didn't even address at all that Hamilton's debt plan was GREAT for New York Bankers, but just awful for Revolutionary War Veterans and for the poor almost everywhere else in the country, that got pennies on the dollar while the Bankers got full value. I have a hard time feeling that he really "repented" or was "reformed" when so many people were hurt by the Debt Plan. It probably had to be done to save the new country, but at least acknowledge in the play that alot of people were hurt. (Sorry, it seems to me that New York immigrant writes a play about another New York Immigrant who used New York power to rip off the rest of the country and the first immigrant is thrilled that the NON-New York Immigrants got ripped off since they weren't from New York... so if it's ok to rip people off and make some rich off the work of others is OK if you are a New Yorker and not if you are Virginia ... HYPOCRISY!!)
