I am a 9 handicap. I've never been a great driver but not terrible either. I tend to have a really high ball flight and even though I average around 270 with my driver I have always felt I am leaving distance on the table by playing a stock driver.
So about a month ago I go into Club Champion and get fitted. Mostly just curious to see what I had to gain. Right away as I'm swinging my current driver the fitter tells me I have a spin problem. I'm producing a really high ball with tons of spin and it's killing my distance and increasing dispersion. Pretty much what I've known for a long time but never seen the numbers.
I hit different shafts and drivers for about 90 mins and we settle on the new Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero with Accra shaft. It's basically a low launching club head with a low launch/low spin shaft. My ball flight was much more penetrating, less spin, which increased my average distance to 293 and my dispersion was much tighter. I was pretty much sold after seeing the numbers.
He rings it up and tells me it's gonna be $950 for the club. The shaft alone was $365. I knew it was going to be pricey but I didn't realize clubs got that expensive. I wanted to pull the trigger but just couldn't without doing a little shopping on my own. But I knew I had to get that club.
So I go home and do some shopping on ebay the next few days. I find the shaft brand new made by a reputable club builder who will put on the adapter I need for $292. So a little savings there.
The biggest thing I found was a clubhead on sale. They wanted $500 for the Callway Mavrik clubhead. I was able to find a slightly used but still brand new looking one on ebay for $240. So a huge savings. So altogether I was able to piece the club together myself for about $550. Not bad, about what you would pay for a brand new stock version.
I have only played four rounds with it so far but I am blown away. I still have some big misses with it as I'm getting used to it but I am hitting the ball like never before. I am going up to spots where my ball will usually land and finding my ball 20-30 yards further than I have ever gone on some holes. The other day I had a nice tailwind on a par 5 on I hit a 362 yard drive (tracked by gps) and had a PW in to a par 5. This is a par 5 that I have only reached in two maybe four or five times and everytime was with a 3 wood or a long iron.
I had three drives in one round that were 320+ (some had wind at my back that helped.) My driving distance has gone up to about 293 average which is almost the exact numbers I was seeing at the fitting. I am happy to say the least and would highly recommend getting fitted especially if you have a swing like mine and feel you are losing out on distance. Bringing that spin down makes a huge difference for everything.
