It can be incredibly hard to form strong friendships with neighbors in Utah for
this reason. I had a similar experience living in another homogenous society, El Paso (Hispanic Catholics). It felt impossible to find a time to get with work or neighborhood friends that were from the area. People were nice, but they spent any and all free time with family with no invitation for my wife and I to join. Maybe several of the individuals I’m thinking of didn’t really want to get together, but my relationship in the workplace seemed to indicate otherwise. Eventually we gave up and finally found friends similar to us—little to no extended family in the area.

I live in the Austin area, and I think you and your family are going to love it here. I’ve not heard of anyone moving here that doesn’t have great things to say.
