I've always needed pants/sweats, a warm jacket and light gloves for midnight

hikes to Timp summit...even in August...and I'm a sweaty guy.

Tell them to bring lightweight but warm layers that they can shed and put in a backpack for the descent.

I went in the middle of summer a few years ago with just shorts/t-shirt and
