Part of the 'sales pitch' when you get offered by a school is a breakdown of the numbers.. however, that isn't the true full amount.
I know a kid who played for UCLA a few years ago. He had a nice apartment in Inglewood, could afford to fly home on the weekends whenever he wanted, didn't know what to do with the rest of his monthly money so he started buying vintage sneakers (cleaning them up then reselling them to make even more money). Then you get the 'gifts' from boosters.
Most of the players I know at the U and BYU make enough to live. BYU actually 'pays' a little more to married players.
.. but again, it's impossible to put a price on things like food, clothing, insurance. Little perks like the team flying you home after bowl games... etc.
They do not suffer.
