Several years ago at a family reunion my nephew nearly stepped on one. It was way too close to where we were camping
...to feel safe about it. But, we aren't fans of killing them either, unless necessary.
My oldest brother has dealt with rattlesnakes a lot as a backhoe operator in AZ, so he caught it. He showed us how to milk the venom. Then he and I walked about a quarter mile away into the forest and let it go.
