Catching and moving was far more dangerous than leaving it be.
The snakes are going to wander over a wide area, so it's not like moving it did much, anyway. The vast majority of bites are from either catching or killing the snakes. Best to just leave it be.
(I say all that hypocritically, as I've also caught and moved rattlesnakes in the past.)
