NHL talent his increased a lot over the years. Some of it's tied to the increase of American talent in the NHL and the fact that American players tend to prefer NCAA over CHL, but there's definitely a shift towards playing college hockey instead of juniors, even among Canadians.
It's possible with the CHL hazing controversy, many Canadian parents will prefer to send their kids to US colleges, where there's at least a perceived increase in oversight on hazing. That and the fact that their kid will graduate with a degree (over 90% graduate—apparently men's ice hockey has the highest graduation success rate of any men's team sport).
I know football and hockey are different developmentally, but both are revenue sports, and if anything, the trend is towards scholar athletes instead of away from them.
