There are definitely benefits to working for a family-owned and -operated company.
Today I had a conversation with my boss about a kid on my team who recently moved to downtown Chicago. Traditionally our department has lost people when they move to Chicago because the commute is so bad. This kid is high potential and already regrets his decision to move after only two months of being there.

My boss offers to personally pay for this kid to break his lease, so he can move and be closer to work. An offer like that inspires deep loyalty and would never happen in a public company.
