This mirrors my opinion. I have been a fan of BYU for nearly 50 years. I understand the challenges and the ups and downs of being a secular university in a spiritual environment. Our values exacerbate our problems more than solves them. P5 membership is a goal because we are striving for our best, but it is not our reason for existence as a program. The sports program at BYU serves as a branch of the university's mission, which is a branch of the overall mission of the Church. There are those that like it, and those that hate it. We are who we are, and we are not going to change for anyone. That, my friends, is something worth supporting. It's the reason why I was so excited when we won our first bowl game through a hail-mary involving two Catholic players, when Ty Detmer won the Heisman, when we beat Miami, when we saw Max Hall telling the crowd, "we're going to win!" and then went out and did it, when Jimmermania, when Danny Ainge went through all of Norte Dame to win, when men's volleyball won multiple national titles, when women's soccer became so good other teams could only fight dirty to compete, when....you get the point. BYU did these things WITH and sometimes BECAUSE of our self-inflicted challenges. I for one do not want that to die. Those times are the good times and why we love the Cougs in the first place. So what if we never get in, we will still succeed regardless. That gauls many. Surprises a few. Mostly, however, it represents who we are.
So what if you don't accept us. We are BYU!
