Golf Course Review - True Blue Golf Club
I had the great pleasure of playing True Blue golf club today and enjoyed it immensely. It is a great design where strategy comes into play and many holes present you with options off the tee.

I had to capture the sunrise as I was pulling up to the clubhouse this morning.

True Blue Golf Club on Pawley’s Island in South Carolina is considered by many as one of the best public access courses in the Carolinas. Together with the even more heralded Caledonia Fish Club (which I play later this week) right across the street, it’s the best one two punch in The Myrtle Beach area.

#2 is a great short par 4. The fairway is wide, but if you play down the right side you will need to play over trees to the green.

True Blue was Mike Strantz’s fourth signature golf course, and it opened to rave reviews back in 1998. Strantz only designed a handful of courses before he died at a relatively young age, which is a major bummer because he was talented. Perhaps he is best known for Tobacco Road in North Carolina, but almost all his courses are excellent and have wow factor.

Strantz crafted True Blue as a nod to Pine Valley and Pinehurst #2, honestly, it reminds me a lot of Tom Fazio’s Pine Barrons course at World Woods Outside of Tampa, Florida. With an emphasis on maintaining a natural feel to the course, there are few of any bunkers on the course and most Sand is considered natural waste areas.

My favorite par 5 was the 5th hole, a classic cape hole design. The crescent shape hole wraps around a lake with the green seemingly hanging on the edge if the water. Challenge the water off the tee and with a couple hero shots you can Be on the green in two. Play safe and it’s a 3 shoot hole for sure.

The Par 3’s at True Blue are excellent, not long with large interesting Green Complexes. They can be nasty if you miss the green.

I love playing golf in the south....the dense forests and marshland always makes for a cool golf experience. This reminded me of some of my favorite Alabama golf courses on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

18 is an awesome medium length par 4 that would be a strong finish on any course. The pure southern clubhouse behind the green makes it a little sweeter too. I really like this hole, it didn’t hurt that I finished with a birdie here. 😉

Personally, I don’t think you should ever pass up a chance to play a Mike Strantz design, he was bold and not afraid to mix it up...which I think makes it a memorable and fun round of golf. If your in the Myrtle beach area, check out true blue, it’s awesome.
