Okay, dumb question: Doesn't the router have to plug in to the modem anyway?

I'm guessing that newer homes have network cables throughout the house. My house is 25 years old. So, wherever I put my modem, the router has to be there too. Right?

Modem -> Firewall (Pfsense) -> 24 port switch -> Netgear Orbi in AP mode.
