"Following the herd" in this situation really isn't that big of a deal. I choose S&P 500 because it is simple and I can
get domestic and international exposure at the same time.

I don't sell equities. The market is turbulent and I still have many many years before I need the money. I'm good with a few more bulls and bear markets. Short-term doesn't bother me.

All that said, could I potentially get some additional basis points increase in my returns by finding an international fund? Probably. But I'd be starting from scratch in that index so the overall influence my portfolio would probably not end up resulting in much. But then again, it may be worth spending an extra couple of days looking at some indexes.
