I like this approach. If your kid wants a phone, get a relay by republic

Wireless. It is a "walkie talkie" that works via cell phone towers and parents can use their smartphones. We have 4 of them for our kids. Before coronavirus hit, we would let them run free wherever they wanted within the neighborhood. It gives them the freedom of childhood that I had in the 80s.
