Flip phones at 13 (talk/text only) and smart phone at 15. No social media at all, until they are home from their mission. We also use parental controls to limit time/content on their phones and review what they are doing on their phones frequently.

It’s so hard to not give your kids a phone when “everybody else has one” at 9 or 10 it seems these days. It really is a big piece of their social lives these days and it’s hard for kids to have friends and hang out if they can’t at least text, but it is terrifying giving them these phones knowing what is available with a few clicks.
