First off, watching that game I thought Southern Miss was just better. They seemed to jump out as a bit more explosive and talented, but lost a close one in crazy fashion.
- LA Tech has a big OL, but they looked slow and sloppy. I’d say they are no better/worse than what we just faced in Troy.
- They have a RB duo (kinda) similar to ours and their main guy (#33) is thick, strong and can pass block and catch the ball out of the backfield.
- They have some pretty athletic WRs who are good, but nothing too much better than Troy IMO. Their passing game seems much more capable of getting the ball downfield as compared to Troy looking to dink/dunk.
- Their QB is more athletic than Watson from Troy, but seems a little more careless protecting the ball than Watson. They can run high tempo but not quite at the same pace Troy wanted to.
- Defensively, they have 3 down lineman similar to our base look and they get creative in their blitzes, so usually sending 4-5 guys and are not afraid to walk their backers up close to challenge the OL too. Their DL did not impress me as far as pressure/athleticism. Their outside Lbs looked to create the most issues coming in off the edge. Their DBs are strong and athletic, but their pass D is undisciplined and completely vulnerable. Overall, our OL should be able to hold up once again in pass pro and set WRs up for big plays downfield. Ply action should be there ALL night. And I really really hope Grimes dialing up passes to our RBs because that will be a plus matchup. If they sell out to stop the inside run like Troy did, we should get chunk plays until they change things up. I think ZW is gonna eat and the OL should come away with very high ratings once again.
