There are certainly a zillion different types of food, but most people have large, overlapping interests. Same with movies or books. People who play video games can be divided into three or four different categories. And so on.
But music has genres that maybe 5% of the population loves, 10% like/tolerate, and 85% are either completely indifferent or hostile. Two people can have huge catalogs of dozens of bands with practically zero overlap. One person's brilliant, is another person's "meh."
