Mr. Rumsfield Walk-on
As a fan, what's your most painful low followed by your most glorious high?
I'm a die-hard Spurs fan. 2013 NBA Finals was the very bottom for me.

Let me set the stage. I had a business trip for game 6 of the Finals in 2013 that I couldn't move. So I booked a flight really early to make sure I would get into my city with plenty of time to get to my hotel for game 6 to watch my Spurs eliminate the Heat. I was ecstatic. Nobody was giving the Spurs a chance in 2013 against that Heat team and they were up 3-2 with a chance to steal it. I get to JFK airport and I was supposed to leave at 1 pm and get into Chicago around 3pm with plenty of time to grab an early dinner and lock myself in my hotel room in peace to watch the game. I get to my terminal and it says my flight is delayed. No big deal I think to myself. Well the sports Gods hated me that day because the stupid flight ends up being delayed by seven hours. I literally end up boarding the flight right when the game is tipping off. I'm almost crying at this point I'm so mad. I seriously considered just skipping my flight but I had to be in Chicago and couldn't miss it.

To make matters worse, I board the flight and the flight crew gets on and literally says, "we are sorry but we are experiencing a glitch and the TV's and wireless are not working on this flight. We are trying to fix them but it looks like you won't have any service until Chicago." This had to be a joke. Nope...it was real. Spurs were playing game 6 and I was completely in the blind.

We finally land in Chicago and I'm in a complete sweat. Thankfully and mercifully, I'm sitting around a bunch of complete losers who know nothing about sports and seem to be oblivious to life so they can't reveal the outcome. I sprint off the plane and run into the terminal and there is a massive crowd gathered around the TV. Manu Ginobili is at the line and there is 28 seconds left. He hits a free throw and the Spurs are up 5. I hear people muttering, "No way, the Spurs are actually going to pull this off." I can't believe it! I see the yellow tape coming out to hold the crowd back. The Spurs are going to win this thing! The next few minutes were the most painful sports memory for me. The Spurs completely blow it, Kawhi missed a free throw, Pop pulls Duncan for defense and Bosh gets a rebound, yada yada yada. To make matters worse, I was wearing a Spurs T shirt and this lady next to me was wearing a Heat shirt. When the Heat forced OT, she started talking trash and yelling in my face. It took all the willpower in me not to respond. I literally sat in that terminal for an hour after the game until close to midnight. I was sick to my stomach. I knew there was still a game 7, but I knew the Spurs were in trouble.

Fast forward to 2014. The Spurs were on a mission. Best record in the league and a 1 seed. Fat Boris Diaw was playing like Magic Johnson. Tim Duncan and his 2 inch vertical was rejuvenated. Manu's bald spot was holding its ground for one more title run. The Spurs meet the Thunder in the WCF and I just know they're going to lose since the Thunder had owned them. Spurs barely get it done in game 6 in overtime! After the game, Duncan guarantees a win: "We have four more to win, we'll get it done this time." He also says, "We're glad it's the Heat." I couldn't believe it! Timmy D giving the Heat some bulletin board material.

The 2014 Finals was a complete and utter demolition. The Spurs played such beautiful offense and completely ripped the Heat's hearts out and stepped all over them. I let out such a loud primal scream after game 5 and I actually cried. It was my sports nirvana. Nothing will ever eclipse the pain I felt in 2013 as a sports fan and the utter jubilation and joy I felt in 2014 when we got revenge.
