I think it was called BECAUSE he muffed it. They threw it late and would not
have called it had he caught it. It seemed a lot like basketball refs who wait and see if a layup goes in before blowing the whistle. If it affected the player enough to miss it, they'll call it, but if he makes it, they'll let it go. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but it seems to be a little bit safer, neutral ground for a referee.
