After BYU took a 14-3 lead Houston was dominating BYU both on offense and defense. Wilson was getting pressured a lot, and the Houston QB was unconscious. Houston scored 23 unanswered points to take a 26-14 lead. If this post was made at that point in the game I might have agreed with the poster.
However, from that point on, BYU outscored Houston 29-0 to win the game 43-26. After a very rough middle part of the game where Houston seemed to have all the momentum, BYU played well on offense and much better on defense. The last 2 or 3 defensive series were very good.
It's hard to figure out what changed or what the difference is between the middle part of the game when nothing was going BYU's way to the latter part of the game when BYU seemed to be doing just about everything right.
Was it just momentum and confidence? If so, why did that change? The onside kick might have been a big factor. The 13-yard punt by Houston certainly helped. Wilson was great. I was having a hard time believing that BYU kept passing the ball late in the game when they really needed to run down the clock. The pass on 3rd down for the TD to give BYU a 10-point lead was a a very gutsy play.
Very happy with the outcome of the game.
After the game was over and reviewing the entire game, I'm not sure what to think of the defense. At times they were terrible. But at other times they were great, especially when the game was on the line. Obviously the defense was good enough for BYU to win the game. Do we all wish it was better and more consistent? Certainly! Hopefully, as they continue to get better players overall, and get better depth, things should improve. Hopefully the other things (scheme, consistent focus, etc.) will continue to improve as well.
