I work in software for a company that makes healthcare software. I'm not as hip
to problems in the health care industries as people who actually work in it. But I do have an an outside-looking-in perspective. A few years ago IHC laid off most of their software engineering staff because they decided to switch to all off-the-shelf software. I've never seen that strategy work. As a software developer myself, I felt the move was pretty callous and short sighted. I was surprised by the sweeping move that effected so many livelihoods which was likely motivated by some faulty c-level executive sales pitch.
