A few years ago IHC laid off most of their software engineering staff because they decided to switch to all off-the-shelf software. I've never seen that strategy work. As a software developer myself, I felt the move was pretty callous and short sighted. I was surprised by the sweeping move that effected so many livelihoods which was likely motivated by some faulty c-level executive sales pitch.
