One good way for BYU to add a game:
CUSA’s Marshall is sitting at #17 and will likely be behind whoever comes out on top of the AAC. Marshall could easily win out and still end up in a garbage bowl. But an additional win over a top 10 BYU would get them into the NY6 schedule, and generate some discussion for the CFP. I don’t know if that would fit with their schedule, but with cancellations you never know in 2020.

The main contender in the AAC is Cincinnati. If Cincinnati wins out they are in the NY6, no questions asked. Could they get a playoff spot? Nope, not a chance.

Unless....

What if they scheduled a late season game against undefeated, top 10 BYU, and beat them? Beating BYU would make it really difficult for the CFP committee to leave them out, especially given the shortened schedules in the P12 and B10, and the cannibalization in the other three conferences. In a normal year they’d probably still be locked out, but this is not a normal year.

Maybe it’s smart to keep those back end dates open for now, to see if a game against BYU can serve almost as a play-in game for someone to wedge their way into the playoff.

The same scenario would hold for SMU, Tulsa, or whoever wins the CCG. Or for that matter, any P5 team that ends up just short of that 4th spot ranking.

Seems possible.
