Why do Ohio State QBs tend to struggle in the NFL?
Terrelle Pryor: Moved to WR. One standout season. Currently out of league at age 31.

Braxton Miller: Moved to WR. Played sparingly as a WR3/WR4. Currently out of league at age 27.

JT Barrett: Practice squad guy only. Bounced around several teams in just a couple years. Currently out of league at age 25.

Cardale Jones: Never moved up depth chart from 3rd string QB. Bounced around a couple teams before joining XFL. Currently out of league at age 28.

Dwayne Haskins: ...not looking good. Benched in week 5 of his 2nd season, currently surrounded by trade rumors. If traded, it is doubtful he'd land on a contender. May be doomed to burnout of the league soon.

Despite the track record, Justin Fields will be a top 10 pick in the next draft.

I'm not a professional evaluator of QB talent, in any way, so maybe Fields is indeed different. To be fair, he shows signs of being different. Despite being a capable scrambler, he does appear more inclined to go through his reads and sit in the pocket than some of his predecessors, but I'm not one to say for sure. Regardless, it seems the Buckeyes have a history of valuing high athleticism over straight-forward quarterback attributes. The Buckeyes place a star athlete behind a top-tier Oline and provide NFL caliber WRs and RBs that typically outmatch 99% of opponents, and give him freedom to improvise. Leaving the QBs unprepared to handle more detailed and structured offenses. Perhaps losing a local legend kid like Joe Burrow to the transfer may be evidence that the program simply doesn't value more traditional pro style QBs.

Hype and perception often trump honest evaluation when it comes to pro sports drafts, so Fields will definitely be the 2nd QB off the board, regardless of whether or not he truly is a trend breaker among OSU QBs. When it's all said and done, however, this will be the best thing that could happen to Zach Wilson, as he falls to late 1st round or even 2-3 rounds, his chances of landing in a more stable program increase greatly.

Ohio State QBs remaining high on draft boards, deservingly so or otherwise, is good for Zach Wilson.
