At this point I think it's too late to take back the "Any Time, Any Place, Any Team" proclamation but it needs to be addressed. Whether that was Tom's idea or not (I bet it wasn't), BYU Athletics allowed that narrative to be broadcast on social media and during a live football game. So now it is what it is. And it's not helping BYU's situation right now.

So Tom's left with 2 choices. 1) Back away from the "Any Time/Place/Team" narrative, which his previous public statement essentially did, or 2) DOUBLE DOWN ON IT. I think he should throw this back on the Pac 12 by making the following statement (obviously a PR team could smooth out the flow and actual verbiage):

"BYU stands by it's 'Any Time, Any Place, Any Team' mantra as evidenced by our competitive schedules as an Independent the past decade. BYU had 3 games cancelled by the Pac12 before the season started but our relationship with the Pac12 remains solid. Our interest in playing Pac12 teams remains as strong and alive as ever, including the remainder of this season. Currently, BYU has open dates on December 5th and 19th and is proactively working to schedule quality matchups. In light of the miscommunication by the media regarding the potential game with UW, BYU wants to make it known we will accept any guaranteed invitation from any Pac 12 team that is interested in playing BYU on any of our open weekends. We are happy to play at your place and on your TV network if you can guarantee us a game. Lets play!"

A statement like this would respectfully put the Pac12 on notice without burning bridges and would change the false narrative that has spread across the media. It's not designed to shame or embarrass the Pac12 but it does correct some of the misinformation and reiterates that BYU wants to play P5 games. Lay down this polite but bold gauntlet, Tom. Because the truth is this. The BYU football players and coaches WOULD play any Pac12 team on the 5th or 19th, whether it's Utah, USC, Oregon, UW or anyone else that wants to go toe-to-toe with the Cougars.
