Yes, the Washington proposal was a lose lose for BYU. But obviously refusing the crappy Washington deal hurt us WAYYY more than accepting the deal would have. If we had accepted the deal the players would have had to practice today and then the UW vs yewtah game would be announced. One extra day of practice and covid testing. That is all it would have cost us. But refusing the deal has been terrible for BYU and has soured the media's love for us. All the annoying P5 fans insist that BYU is afraid to play good teams, the idiots who made the rankings have an excuse to put us lower, and the whole "anyone any time any place" saying has lost all rhetorical value. It is impossible to say just how much this mistake hurt BYU, but it undeniably hurt us more than accepting the raw deal would have, to suggest otherwise is sheer lunacy.
