The SOS argument is a smoke screen so they don't have to come right out and say BYU is not getting in because they are BYU. SOS is a flawed metric that disproportionately favors "ranked" teams which all end up being in the P5 conferences with few exceptions to start the year. Any win or loss is quality and doesn't hurt their preferred group of teams. Meanwhile they won't let BYU in the club and can cancel any game they do schedule with them at a moments notice.
