They don’t want to expand the playoffs and they have a built in excuse not to. More teams in the playoff = higher chance of contamination. They don’t want BYU in there. They don’t want Cincinnati in there.

But you’re missing other points as well. Say you have Cinci vs. Notre Dame in the first round (just throwing names out there). Cinci has some guys on their team test positive the day after the game. In a bowl game, who cares? Everyone gets tested, whoever is positive quarantine, life moves on. But if the winner of that game has to play Alabama in a week and they’re missing a bunch of starters, what do you do?

The playoff committee doesn’t care about “giving everyone a shot.” They care about their product. They don’t want to expand it because they want to keep the $ with the teams in their club. But the certainly won’t expand it this year because it could potentially hurt their product. They don’t care what all the other bowl games do. But even if they did, there’s a difference between two teams playing just each other and 8 teams all possibly spreading the virus among each other.
