My own experience is that once you are more fit, you do more things that require fitness. Just not to the extremes as
The initial “drop weight fast” plan you may have been on.

For some it may not be permanent, but maybe as the weight goes back on they end up where they were before rather that up an additional 10 lbs if they had done nothing at all.
