CFP has a strong history of looking at quality wins - Cincy has them, BYU doesn't
Cincy is 5-0 against top 75 teams (including #22 UCF) and has a future matchup with #49 Tulsa
Coastal Carolina is 2-0 against top 75 teams (including #34 team Louisiana) and has a future matchup with #66 Liberty
Marshall is 2-0 against top 75 teams (including #35 Appalachian State)
BYU is 2-0 against top 75 team (including #39 Boise State) and no future opponents in that range
Looking at that from the committee's perspective, it's pretty clear that Cincy is the top of the group, with BYU, Coastal Carolina and Marshall together in the next tier. Given that the committee (wrongfully in my mind) discounts BYU's win over Boise, they're viewing BYU as having zero top 50 wins, and could legitimately make an argument (based on just the above) that BYU has the worst resume of those 4 teams. Of course, margin of victory and eye test come into play, which is why BYU was #14 while Coastal Carolina and Marshall were #20 and #21.
But eye test can only do so much and BYU is already basically maxing that out. Beating another team ranked near 100 does nothing to help BYU move up. We absolutely need another quality, top 50 (at worst) win.
