I know this has been discussed before, but I'm late to the game. I had seen an episode months ago and thought it was pretty good, but as I'm not a big TV watcher it fell off the radar. I binge-watched several episodes yesterday and I just have to say, if you haven't watched it, and you are a religious person, you must watch it. Making a series on the life of Christ is inherently difficult. Everyone has passionate feelings about how he was, looked, spoke, and different interpretations on the Gospel. I think this series does great justice to the Gospels as written. It doesn't sugar coat things. Christ talks about the need to repent, do good works, etc. It's not a diluted presentation of the Gospel, and it imparts actual knowledge from the Gospels.
The side plots are just brilliant, especially with Nicodemus. They make an entire arc based on the reasonable inference that he was perhaps the only right-thinking and even minded Pharisee in Jerusalem and follow his quest to earnestly and objectively learn about this radical teacher shaking up the status quo. They also build story arcs around stories in the Gospel of which we know no background: Peter and his brother being called as fishers of men, Matthew the publican, etc. These arcs are obviously fictionalized, but entirely reasonable based on what we know from what we have, and provide a very entertaining element.
I also thoroughly enjoy the deep dive into Jewish tradition and culture. You are given a revealing glimpse into how the Pharisees/Sanhedrin functioned, and Jewish religious customs.
All in all, I find it profoundly moving. There hasn't been an episode that I wasn't tearing up to be honest. Your adolescent kids might even enjoy it.
