Cougarclaw Intervention Needed
Finally saw Hamilton - review
first of all Lin Manuel Miranda needs to be commended for his success. he is a brilliant writer and does a fantastic job acting. He's also a terrible singer, and he found a way to land a starting role on a hit broadway musical. That's even more amazing if you think about it. A guy with a high, whiny, non-tonal, non-trained voice...singing lead position in broadway. amazing. I also somehow stumbled on his pre-production versions of HIM singing the songs he apparently wrote from Disney's Moana. He's got his fingers in all kinds of things and is living on top of the world right now.

King George stole the show. Oh my gosh he was hilarious. I wondered aloud what Queen Elizabeth might have though of his performance.

The Good: I liked the multi-racial cast. George Washington was amazing. I liked that it introduces the idea that the all white founders could have been from any race to a generation that is continuing to reject the contributions of white men. I also like that it brings to life pivotal moments in history in a time when the world seems to be tearing them down. I learned stuff about AH that I didn't know. I also spent some time reading historian critiques of the play and while there are some issues, most were quite complimentary at how accurate it was, all things considered. They especially appreciated the use of verbatim quotes from historical records. If anything, historians thought Hamilton was too kind treatment to the actual man himself.

the bad - someone in our watch party asked if any of those characters on the screen were really black or Hispanic in history. I was really surprised and dismayed at the question. That means all kinds of people are going to mistake the race of our founding fathers as this will be their best and perhaps only history lesson. So not only are we tearing down their statues, we're now changing their race in our history lessons. What's going to counteract the play in the minds of those who don't study history? Also, the only white characters from the show were villains (the white towncrier at the beginning and King George of course). I don't appreciate that. The play also had a noticeable anti-slavery message which was not historically accurate. I also thought Jefferson's flamboyancy made well for the stage but woefully out of character. Finally, I had been told that the play was a diatribe against Trump. Where do people get this stuff? I could see nothing in the play that seemed relevant to today's politics. Thankfully.

best Song? I liked Hopeless.
