Why is the International Date Line so weird in south pacific?
OK, because of the question about most eastern point, I had to go look at a map. The international Date line is pretty straight forward for most of it's length ...

A bit of a diagonal jog up by the Bering Strait ...

BUT in the south pacific, things get really strange ...

I understand the jog to get Fiji and Somoa all in the same time zone (and this case all the same DAY!!) ...

BUT there is a really odd "hammerhead" shape going out to capture, I assume, so small islands? What is out there?
