I'm going to add one more thing to this that just came to mind. It's possible (though far less likely than the things I
already listed) that the starter is beginning to fail. When the starter begins to fail, it has some of the internal contacts that are bad, but some that are still good. When that happens, the extra juice provided by a jump may be enough to rotate the starter past the dead contact and initiate a start. If you do the things I mentioned in the prior post and everything checks out fine, check the starter.
