Occasionally Im reminded about the drastic change that has taken place in Utah regarding those who are BYU and Utah fans
It’s something that most of us discuss less and less anymore because it’s been happening for so long. The evolution from being a BYU fan dominated state to Ute fans really accelerated around the Urban Meyer era and maintained momentum throughout the Bronco/Kalani win drought years.

Seems like those who would bail on BYU already have for the most part so the evolution of it all seems pretty well settled therefore something Utah residents don’t notice much anymore having been used to it all by now.

But this morning my 7 year comes in my office and says ... “dad, I wore a BYU shirt to school yesterday and ______ says to me — you like BYU? And then he started laughing at me. Most of the other kids in class started laughing and asking why I like BYU too?”

I had nothing in response. I’d rather not encourage my kids to engage in worthless arguments, so I told him to just ignore the kids.

Here’s the thing though. This boy’s dad works for the church, as in, literally works directly under the 12 apostles. Our community is made up of 90% white Mormons as well and yet we are severely outnumbered as BYU fans.

When Orthodox Mormon kids are poking fun of other kids for being BYU fans then I’d say we have a problem. I have no clue how to address it and there’s not much that can be done besides maybe BYU football managing to pull off a win within my kids lifetime?
