I seriously tried to become a Utah fan
I'm ashamed to say that now.. I'm from CA, I grew up a USC fan. When I moved to to Utah for work in 2010 I decided I wanted to get into the local sports scene and choose my favorite college team in Utah. For 2 seasons I watched every Utah game and every BYU game. (I thought BYU was more exciting to watch but Utah played smash mouth football with a stout defense) I would talk to fans from both teams, here is what I found.
Probably 80% of the Utah fans didn't even know the names of the players, didn't watch the games loyaly and would try to relate with me when I talked Utah football by saying things like "F-BYU, I hate Mormons." It blew my mind that they were really anti BYU fans more than Utah fans.
Don't get me wrong there were some really weird BYU fans out there but at least they stayed on topic with BYU.
This experience with fans over 2 years drove me to become a BYU fan. I've watched every BYU game since. I'm diehard. I've lived in UT for 10 years now so I have met some good Utah fans, the majority of my friends are Utah fans, I love them. But I'm convinced that 80% of the state is a BYU fan or anti BYU fan, then 15% are actually Utah fans, 5% belongs to the Ut st, weber, dixie, suu crowd.

There is this weird religious cultural undertone in Utah and that is what creates most Utah fans, is ppl living in Utah that aren't lds. Except for the minority that really are Utah fans.

Weird deal. Go BYU, Go USC. (In that order)
