UT is simply a better team top to bottom and dominated us. Ty Madden was dominating and was practically unhittable.
Baseball is a game of pitching and hitting and we just aren’t that good in either category. Our pitchers are not filling the zone. Would like to see our season ball-strike ratio, but I’m sure it is way too high (too many balls/walks). We have the velocity, but lack of control is putting us in tough spots repeatedly. I wonder if our pitchers are simply too nervous playing a top 20 team on a big stage. I definitely see some nerves in several pitchers.
Best bright spot tonight was Mikade Johnson. He came in for one inning and looked great! Excellent rebound outing after a rough outing last time. Johnson is going to have a great year.
As for Boston Mabeus, I can see what Littlewood and Bradshaw see in him. Has some cockiness and no fear approach, which we need, but he is still raw and wild. Once he gains control, he’ll be tough on hitters. His mechanics are a little unorthodox, but his velocity is effortless.
As for hitting, our hitters are swinging at a lot of balls and looking at too many strikes. I realize we are facing top pitchers and these reps will help, but we can’t seem to square up the ball much. Top hitter hands down so far is Andrew Pintar. Really like his approach and demeanor. Other stud is Mitch McIntyre. Does it on the mound, at the plate, and in the field.
No names, but a couple players need to be taken out of the lineup. We have a few players with a lot of at bats going back to last year and are batting below .150. Perhaps we don’t have any other options. As others have said, we are not a strong hitting team.
Surprised we didn’t sub in some newer players to get at bats at the end of the game. UT subbed in at least 10 kids.
Just my personal observations from a distance. These tough games will help us tremendously for WCC play. Still think we’ll be fine-no quit in our guys.
