Zag fan here. Yet, on Saturday night, I watched 3/4 of the SMC game vs 1/4 of the Zag game.
Why? To witness a severe contrast of styles. Randy Bennett represents the old-school controller coach, whereas Mark is the new wave. Randy is a dinosaur who believes that micromanaging a game is the route to success. Yep, once it was.
But there are more imaginative guys now and it shows. They have embraced enlightened Euro concepts of drilling players with techniques, but then letting their smarts and talents flow naturally. A much lighter in-game touch. It requires recruiting a higher BB-IQ and giving them freedom to outwit/outperform their opponents on the court without a short leash.
I looked at Saturday's game through a new lens. It was after listening to GU's Tommy Lloyd in a podcast. Not an Einstein, but a very impactful assistant with some fresh insight. Skip through the first half, and learn a lot. I believe that Pope is in the same space. It's the future of US college hoops and BYU is already a step ahead.
