In an earlier thread someone was comparing Alex Barcello to Matt Carlino. That made me think...
I can see it....white guys, 6-2 with dark hair, both played HS in Arizona and were tops in their respective classes. Both went to top-tier Pac 12 basketball schools (UCLA and Arizona) became disenchanted and eventually transferred to BYU.
Matt was extremely talented, a better athlete but Matty basketball was also very polarizing as he could take over a game or shoot you right out of it. He was a great passer, tremendous at getting long assists and his defense/steals were were among the best BYU has ever had. His shooting...well, that depended on which direction the wind was blowing that day. He came after Jimmer with the same shot section but not the same ability. A gunner. But occasionally...crazy good and when he was on, he was a spectacle to behold.
I looked in the record book and here are Carlino's appearances. Now remember, Matty frequently came off the bench AND did not play his Senior year (transferred to Marquette).
9th All-time in Assists
6th Best Single-Season-Assists
7th All-time in Steals
5th Best and 7th Best Single-season-Steals
3rd Best Single-game Steals (7)
I was surprised at how many times Carlino's named appeared in the record book and I believe he did get his degree from BYU.
AB has proven himself as a true leader. Don't know how many times his name will appear in the record book but he is going lead this team...his team...to March Madness.
