International flights being changed: common occurrence or bad luck on our part?
Two years ago my wife and I went to Italy. We booked a nonstop flight from LAX to Rome 5 months in advance. Two months later our flight was cancelled by the airline and we were put on a connecting flight through Copenhagen. It sucked, but we were able to adapt the trip a bit and see Copenhagen so it was fine.

Fast forward to today. Four months ago we booked a direct flight from LAX to Costa Rica four our family of six for spring break. The airline (JetBlue) just cancelled that flight and made it a connecting flight through Orlando which is a total nightmare, cuts off a whole day of the trip and throws off our itinerary, to say nothing of having a layover in the middle of the night (both ways) with young kids.

This is the only two times we have ever flown internationally and both times our direct flights have gotten the axe. Is this common? I’m wondering if and when we travel next time if we are booking too far in advance or something, or if this is rare for this to happen?

**I get that this current situation is during a pandemic and airlines are having to adapt flights. Still sucks big time. We had to cancel and rebook through a different carrier for more money. We were too far in to cancel the whole trip at this point.
