Returning production is such an overrated metric IMO
for example BYU lost Simon, Hifo and Shumway and all their replacements did is put up the most receiving yards by WR's at BYU in over a decade.

The lost player will be replaced by someone and that someone could be equally good, better, or worse. The problem with using it as a metric in determining future success is they are most certainly predicting the replaced productivity will be worse. There are a few players this will most certainly be the case, but there are opportunities for players to be even better. For example, Tyler Batty may be better than any one who played DE last year. Chaz Ah You may be better than anyone who played safety last year. Connor Pay may be as good as anyone who played on the O-line not named Christensen. Losing a first round QB and one of the most productive WR is going to sting for sure. But just like in the Boise St and USU games in 2019, the backup QB stepped in and did just fine, and both of those guys are back.
