What are the stats on "expected" onside kicks?

I'd imagine they're way lower as most successful onside kicks are based on surprise.

That said, the downside to this suggestion is it would take the element of surprise out of it.

In BYU's experience the 4th down difference between too hard and too easy is 4th & 19. Two of BYU's biggest 4th down

It was nearly 21% before they changed the rules for safety. It fell to 6% and then bounced to 12% in 2019.

A great idea. And can be tweaked to the perfect percentage. Whether that’s 4&15 or 12 or 18 or 23.
