But the sibling started arguing about which lot they chose and that my friend had the better/bigger lot. After that went on for some time, my friend backed out, and his parents and sibling bought all 3 lots and subdivided them into 2.

I can't even imagine living with my parents (or parents in law) on one side and a sibling on the other. Seems crazy to me.
