I believe Pope recruited him at UVU before he blew up as a HS player.
So he had a good relationship w Alex from a few years before — when Alex entered the transfer portal from UA.
The connection was coach Pope, recruiting extraordinaire. It's a good example of why coaches shouldn't shy from aiming high.
