dogs like they're children by taking them into stores or letting them run free in my neighborhood where they have bitten small children and crapped on peoples' lawns.

I think that it is awesome that you and your kids have a great family dog. I still love the family dogs that I grew up with (a half german shepherd/half wolf, and later a mutt that was mostly golden retriever).
