Hmm before Alex Smith left Utah had won four straight.

Then he graduated and Utah won 1 more year, then BYU had a nice run with back to back wins and 3 of 4. So if anything, Alex leaving ushered in an era of BYU being competitive again. So BYU losing their best player in recent memory could easily lead to the opposite, they lost their big chance to beat Utah
