My wife and I were in that situation for a year, savings were high 30s - low 40s
Our mortgage on our condo was only $600/month, so that helped/made it possible.

I was laid off just before our first was born, had a job offer to work for the church, but my wife loved her job and wanted to keep working, so I tried the stay at home dad deal for a year before my former boss gave me a work from home job that had ultimate flexibility on hours (total worked, worked when I wanted/could, early mornings, evenings etc when my wife was at work and my kid was sleeping etc)
