It seems that if you are a high income individual, a traditional contribution with a backdoor Roth conversion is the way
to go whether you plan to retire early or not. You just do the conversion yearly rather than waiting until a future early retirement. To avoid as much up-front tax hit as possible, you would contribute the entire year's contribution in one go and then immediately convert to a Roth.
