I think there is a blind spot for many where they cannot discern between laughing with us, and laughing at us. I could see the OP story being a funny joke told among church or BYU people, but someone from the outside isn't making an "inside" joke. They're on the outside mocking it for laughs.

The Mitt Romney story calling Joseph Smith a con man defines their opinion of the Church and its history.

That said, I think they have some great content. Like all comedy, some is hit and miss, but occasionally they have some stories that absolutely nail a concept, even if not laugh out loud comedy, is great cultural or political commentary.
