Almost two years ago, during the summer before my son's Sophomore year,
he had basically earned a starting spot on the varsity football team. In fact he was going to be making all the coverage calls in the secondary. His coaches told me how much he meant to their defense. It was a big deal to him and felt he could start getting his name out there for college recruiting purposes.

About three weeks before the season started, they were running drills and he went up high for a ball and his feet got taken out from under him. He came down hard on his shoulder breaking his collar bone. It required surgery, which sidelined him for most of the year. Not as devastating as a torn ACL, but still really tough for him after all his hard work.

Fortunately, he made it back at the end of the season for a couple of regular season games and a couple of playoff games. He started the same week he was cleared. But losing most of that year was really tough and probably set him back a bit from his goals.

This past year he had a good year and made the all region 1st team.

So it really sucks in the short term, but these kinds of things can really be good character building experiences.
