That sucks really, really bad. Obviously, you want your kid to be able to play, but this could be an opportunity
My sophomore year I tore my meniscus so I couldn't play. I asked my coach if I could work the whiteboard and score for drills. I learned a lot about the X's and the O's of the game, what the emphasis of each drill was, and had a chance to understand overall strategy better. I did the same thing my senior year when I dislocated my shoulder. You get a ton of one on one "coaching" that you wouldn't have otherwise. That whiteboard time led to me being able to coach later on and ended up helping more than playing would have. It sucks, but if nothing else, it could show your coach that you want to be there and give you a leg up in future years.
